The official opening of the Kazakh State University was held on January 15 in 1934. On the 2nd of December same year the university was named after Soviet political figure Sergey Kirov. After Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, the university was named after prominent philosopher Al-Farabi.

On this day in 1992 Guryevskiy region and Guryev town (founded in 1640) were renamed Atyrau region and Atyrau city, respectively. The total area of the region was over 113, 000 square meters with the population of over 443,000 people.

The Government of Kazakhstan made a decision at its session on January 15 in 2008 to establish "National Space Research and Technologies Center" JSC named after academician Umirzak Sultangazin. The company has under its umbrella four joint-stock companies, namely "Joint Kazakh-Russian Enterprise "Baiterek" JSC, "NC" Kazakhstan Garysh Sapary" JSC, "Republican Center for Space Communications" JSC and "National Space Research an Technologies Center" JSC.

A special economic zone Burabay was created in the territory of Burabay district in Akmola region on January 15, 2008 to promote development of tourist cluster and infrastructure and meet the needs of Kazakhstani and foreign tourists in the area.

Head of State Nursultan Nazarbayev visited the National Tennis Center in Astana on January 15, 2012 to check out the newly built complex. The new complex had six state-of-the-art tennis courts. During the visit, President Nazarbayev personally tested the new courts and showed class to young athletes.

On this day in 2013 Uroki Garmonii (Lessons of Harmony) directed by Kazakhstani Emir Baigazin was honored with the World Cinema Fund prize.

In 2014, the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies together with KAZNEX INVEST Agency developed the national export strategy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The strategy defines 12 key export markets for Kazakhstan - Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, China, Afghanistan, Iran and the EU.

On January 15, 2015, the English-Kazakhstan dictionary was launched to help make translations from English into Kazakh.

Raneniy Angel (Wounded Angel) by Kazakhstani director Emir Baigazin was selected to run in Panorama Special section at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival on January 15, 2016. The film is the second installment of Baigazin's trilogy about the complicated world of a teenager.

The same day it was announced that promising Kazakhstani actor Sanzhar Madiyev won The Hollywood Immersive Scholarship. The actor got a chance to attend the prestigious Acting Immersive Program run by Hollywood Immersive.

On January 15, 2017, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev arrived for an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

As part of his two-day visit, President Nazarbayev met with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi to discuss the problems of cooperation between the two countries in economic, investment, energy, as well as cultural and humanitarian spheres. The sides also touched upon the international agenda.
